Choosing the Right Sign Materials

When designing a sign it is important to give much thought to the materials to be used. Although elements such as colors, text, and size help to create a sign that represents your brand well, the material chosen is just as important, if not more. There are endless material choices available, however not every material is appropriate for every sign. Before selecting a material, the designer and customer should determine if the signs will be interior or exterior. Exterior signs require a more durable, weather resistant material. Interior signs are protected from the elements and can allow for more options. It should also be determined if there is a high or low vandalism risk where the signs will be hung. Schools, stadiums, and other heavily populated public areas tend to have higher risks of vandalism to signs. Certain materials minimize the risk of damage that can be done to a sign. How often the signs will be replaced or changed should also be considered. For properties with frequent changes in tenants, or companies that frequently change office assignments for their employees, a material that allows for a cost effective replacement is important. Finally, the material also speaks towards a brand. Certain materials provide a more aesthetic appeal for a professional or upscale setting.
